Jan 13th. The ice at IBP is NOT safe. PLEASE STAY OFF THE ICE. Give it more time. Im thinking two weeks based on the forecast. Still a few days hovering around zero this week. Thanks for doing these reports robg. I appreciate your time and effort. Please listen to his info as he is experienced and knows the area very well. BP

I do appreciate the reports, I really do but trust your own judgment or trust someone that you know for a fact has experience. not trying to be a sht disturber here but I think Rob is only step foot to fish on the bay for a couple of seasons now with all due respect Rob. Apologies in advance if I'm wrong. I'm just going on what I read on the board.

Hey @ bentpole ....truly not trying to slag you personally or Rob either as I stated earlier that appreciate reports.....There's a BUT here though..... I believe most of us experienced fishing forum people know that we all walk a fine line on what (early) safe ice is, how we say it and who we should trust. I really don't like the idea of someone new to ice, icefishing and icefishing forums getting on-line for guidance and being lead to trust someones advice. No harm , no foul in what rob does .....puts what he KNOWS out there.. He's also freely divulged that that he's been trying for a few years and maybe has a handful or less of the deep water beauties. To me a couple times a year for a for only a few years with a fish or two....unless Rob is keeping secrets...lol...is not that experienced. In my opinion we should be more careful and truly thats all I'm trying to say.

Let me start off by saying... my mistake in terms of the area....not sure when it switched in my mind but at the time I responded I thought we were talking about Kemp.

Jan 16th, 2020. Very sketchy thin skim of ice at IBP. DEFINITELY NOT SAFE TO WALK ON. The cold snap should tighten things up but i wouldn't venture on the ice at IBP until at least the weekend of the 25th. I will update daily on conditions now as the ice grows. Hopefully the winds don't break up what has formed. Please use caution and patience. It won't be long now

Hope the North side of the bay still has some ice with the winds we had today. It wasn't pretty out there when I went to see what was going on (at Glenwoods) at around 4 PM. Hopefully the next few day (actually night) temperatures will tighten up the lake on those whitie grounds XF

Adam Goy did a test yesterday afternoon on the 9th just north of the park, after the 100 yards of old ice , the new ice he was going through with 3 shots, he said he will probably have his huts our for next weekend. its up tp you guys but i would wait a few more days, with snow cover its going to slow down ice production a bit. just my $0.02, cheers.

Haven't had a chance to get out with the storm etc but i agree based on the temps that it will take until next weekend for the ice to tighten up and be safe to walk on. I have not walked out yet because the ice at the ramp was deteriorated from the rain tun off and warmer weather mid week. I said in an earlier post that it would be next weekend at the earliest. Be patient guys. Its coming.

Jan 19th. The ice at IBP is snow covered. Lots of snowmobile tracks along the shoreline. There was one orange hut from someone who walked out from 9th line. I am not condoning any walking or riding on the ice at this time. I sm only reporting what i saw. I walked out maybe 20 to 30 yards with my spud. I didnt like the way the ice felt or sounded at this time. It still needs to tighten up a bit in my opinion. Spud didnt go through but didnt sound as solid as i like. I'm still advising to wait until next weekend before any attempt to venture out. Please be safe if you decide to venture out. Spud, safety gear a definite must. Its not for the feint of heart at IBP right now.

Jan 20th. Its looking good at IBP for this weekend. Spoke with a snowmobiler who said he spudded out quite a ways and found 4 inches of good ice. I'll try and get out to punch a few holes on Wednesday and get some measurements. I can tell you that snowshoes will definitely help with walking. There looks to be about 8 inches of snow on top of the ice.

Work commitments wil not allow me to be able to get out and drill today. I will try and get out on Thursday afternoon to get some measurements. If anybody decides to go out please bring all your safety gear and use extreme caution. Personally i still think we need to wait until the weekend. Safety is the number 1 concern for all.

Ok guys here is what i found. Walking out from the boat ramp. For the first 100 yards or so its a mix of white pack ice and black ice. About 5 inches. After that it is 4 to 5 inches of black ice. I walked out to the 40 foot depth range (@ 400 yards) and found the walking quite easy. Much of the snow has blown away. I would not recommend any machines based on my findings. Im sure others will disagree but i would leave the toys parked for one more week. Yes there are sleds out there but i cannot condon it with 4 to 5 inches of ice. Walking should be safe in the perch grounds. Please be safe

From Niagara Rob, and never fished IBP. You mentioned perch grounds” - how far out from shore, and what depth are you referring to as perch grounds?

From Niagara Rob, and never fished IBP. You mentioned perch grounds” - how far out from shore, and what depth are you referring to as perch grounds? If you walk straight out from the boat ramp it drops off 10 feet about every 100 yards. Between 200 and 300 yards out is a bit of a drop off where it begins to get deep faster. At 300 yards you are in about 40 feet of water. Perch can be caught anywhere at IBP but that is the area where you will most likely run into the schools. At the 40 foot mark you may also catch the odd whitefish or lake trout cruising in. Beyond that point the water gradually gets deeper to an average of 60 feet with a few holes of 80 feet but you will have to walk out closer to the islands for that. That is the most likely area to find lakers and whities. I hope this information helps
