Hi everyone,
Just a quick note to say hi and intro myself. Im based in the Barrie area and have fished open water for almost 40 years now. Im a mobile fisherman who enjoys taking the boat to several different lakes in several zones. I typically target "tasty fish" like lakers, eyes, perch, crappie, whities and salmon. Comparably, pretty new still to hard water still but fell in love with it my 1st time out and there was no turning back.
This weather is killing me and can't wait for the hard water season!
Cheers,

G'day, my name is Steve and I'm from St Clements, near Kitchener Waterloo. I've been ice fishing Cooks Bay for years with my sons and my brother but only signed up last January and haven't posted anything until this morning. I will make a point of stopping by to say G'day this season for sure as I totally appreciate your efforts and all the postings. This is the only relevant social media out there. Cheers

Hi my name is Eshan and im from Bangladesh and have been in Canada for 7 years now and currently live in Toronto. I started ice fishing last winter on cooks bay and absolutely loved it! Here is how i got into it: I did many fishing back home as a i grew up beside water and mountains and valleys due to my dads profession in the Military. Fishing was always my number 1 hobby until i started living in the big cities in my teen age. Anyways, after i came to Canada i never really got back into it. Only fished few times with other peoples gears and caught some basses and carps. Was too busy in toronto and didnt really have any partner my age. Last year i started dating a Muskokan girl from Huntsville whom i met at work. One day in july she told me she really misses fishing and wants to go fishing right now haha, so we picked up some cheap combo and lure from CT and took out my old shimano gear (from back home) from the suitcase lol and headed to rice lake. We were amateurs (my fishing technique from back home is very different, mostly float fishing in calm lakes and sink fishing in 100-300 ft water and keeping a straight line in 45 degree with a free floating standing bobber that you attach after casting) and almost lost interest the first day there but after she caught a 3 lbs largemouth at the end of the day i knew im coming back haha. So thats how fishing started for me in Canada! We eventually got some high end stuff and started doing it full-on until the end of summer. Let me tell you i fell in love with perch already at that point after i had my first bite! It was just the best tasting fish compared to all the bass, pike, salmon and carp i cooked. I didnt want fishing to end in the summer because freshwater fishing is just spectacular in Ontario! so I started looking into how we can make this hobby a year round thing as the summer was ending. We did trout fishing too in the fall. So i started reading and researching ice fishing and bought everything i thought i needed. I was actually very surprised that we can do ice fishing in ontario, i always thought it was only possible farther north like in Alaska or Yukon. After returning home from the holidays, on our first day as a test run we went to our old summer fishing spots on beaverton and in jacksons points where i drilled my first hole. At first i was terrified to step on suspended ice where i knew there is water underneath! I never been on ice ever before in my lif. Even tho i went to muskoka for christmas, I didnt walke over the ice the. Her family gave me many tips tho. The idea of walking over flating ice was just too nerve wrecking for my brain for the first time haha! She never did ice fishing herself either. But She played on ice before tho. But i was acting like i got this and walked confidently over the ice even tho on the inside i was having a stroke haha. it was January 3rd so the ice was pretty good at that time last year. Anyways we came back after trying for sometime with the wrong rods and wrong lure and in improper clothing haha. So on the third day we came for a full day on cooks bay! And my life changed forever. This is how it went: It was the first time ever i been to cooks bay. I fished simcoe before from many shore spots all thru summer. I just blindly came to cooks bay after hearing a lot of good things, about the people and the potential of the fishery. I was very excited! I arrived on the keswick side at around 8am and after asking around, some kind locals gave me direction to the ramp. I was very hesitant to come down the ramp but a fellow fisherman who was parking there assured me there is land not more than a feet below the ice and my car will be okay. So i parked and got out and took out the sled and buckets and auger and headed towards the middle! My blood was pumping! I was so d**n excited! I drilled many holes with the cheap auger i had at that time, it was very hard. I got exhausted. I wanted to set up the shelter after we caught something. After 2 hrs of trying and cutting many holes, we caught absolutely nothing and didnt even feel a bite. We were pretty sad at that moment. She wanted to pack up. But i dont give up that easy. I gave her the keys to the car and i started walking towards the elderly couple a bit far from us who was catching one after another. Let me tell you if i hadnt met that couple i probably wouldnt be here writing this story. I greeted them and asked if i can just watch them. They welcomed me and even offered me to use their drilled holes. I was still catching nothing. I waved to my gf who was packing up to come over. She came and tried too but we still caught nothing but they were catching one after another. The gentleman then took a look at my rod and setup and told me how off i am on the setup haha. So he told me what i need and what lure to use and we immediately got up after thanking the couple and to go to Canadian tire. We got the right rod and lure and came back to meet them but they were gone. Im really thankful to this couple, if you are here on the forum may God bless you for showing us the ways. It would probably take me a full season to learn what you showed me that day.(im the brown guy who came and said hi and the girlfriend joined after. lol should be easy to remember me given that im probably the only brown guy who does ice fishing ) We then tried with our new setup and boom!! One after another!! I couldnt hold myself! I never had this quick action of fish anywhere in my life! Specially from the kind of fish i liked eating! It was simply one of the best moment of my life! We setup the hut and sat down until 5 pm and caught plenty! We came home with many jumbos and i was so d**n happy! This hobby is so rewarding. When i fried them and had my first bite, oh boy oh boy! Best tasting fish ever! Even better than the summer perch. This perch from this cold water im telling you... mmmm delicious. Since then we went ice fishing every weekend on cooks bay. I have even been eating perch from ice fishing all the way until fall, thats how much i caught. I just ran out 2 months ago haha. i think i like ice fishing better than any other kind of fishing say it fly fishing, sea trawler fishing, summer boat fishing or net fishing. Since then i got a 14 ft boat for my love for fishing, caught my first walleye, now i have 6 rods for ice fishing alone, st croix, shimanos, a nills auger, powerhead, heater, shelter, floatation suit, laods of lure and bait and lines and other equipments. I think i cam a long way in just one year when i started with 20 dollar combo and 30 dollar auger. All was possible only because of the kind support from the fishermen of Ontario and specially cooks bay. This thanksgiving i raised it, being thankful for ice fishing. PS: Peter i watch all your videos and always read all the ice watch emails from your forum. You kept us safe and took the guess work out of the game. I totally depend on your forecast and green flags. Sorry i never posted here but thanks again for the amazing community of cooksbay!
