So, while Peter is nursing himself to a better health (wishing for a quick recovery Peter), I'm sure many on this board have been out fishing from Gilford. Last I've seen was 3.5 inches of ice out of Gilford. It would be nice if everyone could post their findings of ice thickness while Peter gets well... XF I was out last Thursday ice in the south end was about 3 inches 12fow today my buddy said out of gilford was about 4 inches. Out by the fingers there’s more

Just spoke with my neighbour. Second hand information, but take it with a grain of salt. They moved one of the huts that was on 7 inches of ice to deeper water around 12+ feet and the ice was around 7-8 inches. This is out of Glenwoods Road heading North-West. He also said all the water and slush on the lake has tightened up. Still early, so use extreme caution when heading out!

Should be good to go for the weekend if you can believe the Barrie forecast on Accuweather (on Cooks anyway). Yay!

Tried to get on the bay at Glenwoods Road with my 4 wheeler and no luck. Seems that the mild temperatures and the water runoff have taken their toll. Looks like an ATV or snowmobile broke through the ice maybe 10 feet out from the shore. Not deep at all but I'm sure it's not fun getting wet. Some people are out on the Bay today and I'm assuming they got on it from the park just south. There are bolders there and my ATV is too wide to make it through them. Oh well... Waiting time again XF

Should be good to go for the weekend This is of course for early ice experts with all the safety gear and DEFINITELY NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE!!! I doubt there is any chance at all the rentals will be out by the weekend.

Definitely not for average joes, stay safe out there guys, not worth it for a few fish. These wild temps are inconsistent. If you do get out there play safe! Fingers crossed the ice really grows soon!

I spudded my way out from the east side to the middle of the bay.half way up the bay in Gilford/keswick area. Was on 4" of Solid black ice in the thinnest spot. I was walking and do not suggest driving a ATV out there if you're unsure of what's going on. Lots of Slabs, tiny jigging rap hit alot of the big ones.

On the East side by Glenwoods, as long as you stay inside of the huts and towards shore, it's definitely safe to walk on... Just be safe All! I would think that ATV's and sleds are safe as well, but use them at your own discretion. The huts out on the East side (Keswick/Glenwoods Road) are on some pretty good ice (7-9 inches). Please remember to support some of the local shops for breakfast/lunch or dinner while you're in the area. Winter is a slow time for locals, so I'm sure any they will be much appreciative of any income coming in from ice fishing season. This will also send a message to the township of how important it is to keep the lake access available to those that make the trip up here! Tight lines and be safe out there!!! XF

Run off isn’t the only issue on the lake.
Water levels have risen with the heavy precipitation destroying shorelines and creating false shelves.
Nuttin’ a few days of cold ain’t gunna fix👍

A few souls on the bay today, but I'm sure they took a beating once the winds started coming up. Drive to the end of Glenwoods around 4 PM and it didn't look good at all out there with the wind and the blowing snow.
Hats off to anyone that was out there! That is as hardcore as it can get...
Next few nights seem like there will be a lot more ice making weather. In the minus teens for the next few nights. It's cold right now in the Wick and according to the forecast it's suppose to get a lot colder.
Just a prediction, but I think toys (ATV's and smaller personal transportation vehicles) will be safe to go on the ice next week.
As always, USE common sense when going out there!!! Drill, measure and move on (not far before repeating again).
South Cooks is almost ready all. Waiting a week or two depending on the weather, is much safer than taking a chance and ruining what appears to be a short ice fishing season!

Excellent ice making weather the next couple nights. Terry Goy will be setting his huts out tomorrow for the weekend. With a solid 5”-6” it’s good for the quads and sleds so I’m expecting that this weekend. See you out there Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Tight lines and be safe out there. 🎣

CAUTION!!! The ice at the end of Glenwoods is new. Was there about an hour ago and you can tell where the open water was a couple of days ago.
It will DEFINITELY not hold any machines. Even the locals have not been on it since it all broke up. If you are going to walk, follow the footprints that are already there. Even that is on your own discretion...
If you are bringing any toys or want to walk out from a safer spot, there is a park a couple of streets south. That's what I'll be using tomorrow with my 4 wheeler. And PLEASE! Don't block the machine access which is between the last two bolders on the left of the parking lot.
Tight lines everyone!
