Some tank exchange programs have been fined for not giving the full amount of propane. It's an easy scam to perform. Weigh a known to be empty tank on a bathroom scale and note the weight. A full tank must weigh 20 lbs more than that or you are being hosed. Temperature has nothing to do with it.

Hi Peter. I dont know about amount of propane but I do know a gas station by my house that sells propane full tanks that when empty you exchange for a full 1. They are $40 . Most other places around here sell them for about $70. If you need any please let me know and I will bring them with me on Monday morning. thickice

When i exchange my tanks with refilled ones , that process is done at a plant of some sort . the tanks are put on a scale and filled until a certain weight has been reached . I suspect the desired weight has been cut back , best guess . just put less propane in the tanks , the consumer will never notice ,you see it happening in most all products now a days , cereal boxes , big macs , everything is getting smaller yet were still paying ridicules prices...

Hey Peter, I would try what gearheart said. Weight a couple different empty ones before you return them. Weight the new ones and the difference should be 20 lb. I bet your right and its less than 20 .

Empty weight should be stamped on the tank collar.

No i did not know there was a scam going on , however i do know that over the ice fishing season i get well over 100 tanks exchanged , i have been doing the same thing over the years and know how long a tank should last because you get a feeling for that short of thing , to my surprise this season there were issues i had of tanks running out prematurely, that was my thinking at the time but never gave it much thought . scam ah ? hmmm

If I had to guess Peter maybe the super cold winter had people setting the heaters on high more times than not as well as I know for sure 2 places in my neighborhood under cuts you with propane and when you call them on it they will ante up, if they have done nothing wrong they would have told me to go screw myself. To remedy that I stopped using the exchange and had them fill the tanks I bring in making sure it tips the scale at the 20lb mark. You will save at least 25% that way, well at least I do.

I know i was exchanging tanks up notth for $27 and they never seemed to last as long as they should, granted it has been cold but it wasnt lasting nearly as long as it should. Gave up swapping tanks and started getting them filled at costco.... An empty tank i ran dry cost me $11.92 to fill at costco. Half the price as swapping a tank! Plus you pay by the pound there, not by the tank. So you could top up a half full tank and only pay for what you get. Cheapest place i could find for prooane

You NEVER get 20 LBs of propane when they fill your tank. The weight of the tank empty is stamped on the top of every tank. So for argument's sake lets say the stamped weight on the tank is 20LB. They will then set the weight on the scale at 40LB. Follow me so far?
Then they hook up the propane filling nozzle to the top of your tank, which weigh's 3LB's. 20Lb tank + 20Lb's propane = 40 Lb minus the 3 Lb's for the nozzle = 37Lb's.
I use my fish scale to weigh the tank right in front of the attendant before he fill's it, then weigh it right after he fills it.

HAs anybody tried using one of the 5 lbs tanks on their buddy heater, and just getting it refilled when empty? It has to be cheaper than buying the little green Coleman tanks. I know a 5 lbs tank, new , at Canadian Tire is $40.00. The adaper hose is another $10.00. That's a $50.00 investement. The tank wil be good for 10 years i belive.

ROBG. I have used the 5lb tank for several years now.and have been very happy with the place that I get it refilled. they only charge me 5 bucks so I shoot them a toony tip every now and then. keeps the service great and the tank is always full to the top. I use one of those sunflower heaters and get about 7 to 8 hours run time on the 8000btu low setting. that is more than warm in my three man eskimo pop up,and quite often I come home with a part full tank. so evey now and then the guy filling the tank says no charge.

ROBG, I have had a 5lber for 4 seasons now and love it, last me 2 8 hrs days on low with my buddy heater, I always buy 1Lb 3 pack once a year when they are on sale, keep 1 with me at all times as a back up, at roughly 15bucks for 3lbs, those 50 bucks are caught up quick, from then on its all savings and convenience, dead empty costs me under 4 bucks to fill at Costco, if you have the room, I would highly recommend.

I fill my 20 lb, and 5 lb tank at Costco in Barrie. 20 lb tank is usually $11. and 5 lb tank is around $2.50. I use the 5 lb to heat my clams mr buddy. I fish alot in the winter. I only had to refill the 5 lb once. in other words I spent $5 on propane last yr.
