Hey I'm heading up for my annual ice fishing trip on Lake Temagami. I usually buy bait from a local guy, but I was informed last night that a mink got into his bait shed and wolfed down his entire stock of shiners and pinheads....So I was wondering if anyone knew any bait shops open for the winter along Hwy 11, preferable as close to Temagami as possible.
PS. Yes, I am aware of Google, but shops are often closed for the season, Google is not always the most accurate and up to date and i definitely need bait for my trip don't want to risk it on a bait shop that may have closed a year ago, but still shows up on maps...
THANKS

Elwood Epps is open just N or orillia I beleive.
he has quality minnows of all sizes.
I only go there in the summer so check, dont take my word for it.
Also, there is a small place just south or Orillia, not sure of the name, but he is just before the first exit.

Lake Bernard Outfitters in Sundridridge and just off Highway 11 also has bait and tackle . But although North of Orillia they are south of North Bay .

jacobs bait in tackle right off highway 11, in orillia, 5 bucks for a scoop that will last you about two weeks, well at least thats how much it lasts me, two scoops is way too much you wont see any water in your bucket, just minnows, shiners, 1 scoop is actualy 4-5 scoops, great guys, people say that the dude gives you less then the women, i get the same from both a TON!!!!

Icefreek, I can back that up 100%! I go to Jacobs all the time. They load up your bucket for next to nothing! Once you're in orillia, they're on hwy 11 northbound directly across from a gas station that's southbound. Just something to watch for cause they're easy to miss. Also, I think they're a major supplier so you're getting minnows straight from the mother load.

Have these minnows been tested for VHS that your bringing into our clean waters up north ? legal yes up to 10 dozen, but do you care enough not to ruin our fisheries for the price of a few cents or numbers of minnows you can't even use ? It's very sad you as fishermen don't care .? Our natural resources are to be protected and not destroyed . SICKENING TO SEE that for some its just about pennies and are willing to DESTROY AT ALL COST . In the end you will also destroy the live bait industry and although I hate to see it ., I will think about it since some just don't care .

hey t.d. the minnows in orillia have no disease, but when you buy in the summer they have spots, i go to haliburton to fish for lakers, i get non-stop action there in the morning, the closest shop is an hour away and the guy litterally counts 12 minnows and it costs me 8 bucks, too much for me, im not a milllionaire here, i need at least 4 dozens, since the fish have a light bite, and im also going to gilford afterwards, besides im not going to your "northern home" in burks falls, im going to much cleaner and not outfished waters, so you can relax, buddy, the fish beside your home are mostly outfished, and if noy they are full of disseases

There is a reason there is a wholesale ban on baitfish being sold to retailers up here . We are a VHS free zone and the MNR wants to keep it that way . Why do you think retailers can't buy or sell from wholesalers from Lake Erie and most from South of Gravenhurst . The only ones that can be bought from wholesalers around Simcoe are ones who had ponds tested for VHS and wholesale them north of Gravenhurst . I highly doubt there are not any retailers for minnows in the Haliburton Highlands . Erie is the redzone and can only sell to retailers within that zone and Simcoe zone is almost at that point unless they have been tested . The other point is if you utilize an area such as the Haliburton Highlands then support retailers there . Who do you think pays to have accesses etc maintained .? Yes it's the local economy who are taxed there . I also question your millionaire thought since I have yet to meet one out on the ice . There must be alot of them according to your statement . TD

there is one in the haliburton highlands, except its an hour away as i STATED BEFORE if you dont know, or are to stupid to know? i went to your bait shop and your employee said its a scoop for 7 bucks, so im like ok, hegets a scoop, and takes a tiny cup from that scoop, and thats it it was 15 minnows! thats wayyyyyy OVERPRICED, and the extra money is going right in his pocket, i dont support snobs like that, he gets like 200 000 thousand minnows, for a couple thousand bucks, and sells them at 7 bucks for 15, that is a jerk right there folks!

Nice to have a lodge with internet and pool, nice huts too. Thanks for the shop replies guys

Your story just keeps right on changing and more lies . I also don't own a bait shop or ever did nor have any employees . Also the bait shop your referring to does not charge 7 dollars a scoop and you already inflated the price from your last post on another board by over $1.25 . I guess everytime you post inflation occurs . Everytime your taken to task for outright lies you respond by name calling . Don't twist it around now either . Local is not usually considered an hr away . Your price shopping to save pennies or cents . You wouldn't buy local if a bait shop was right at the access point if there was a nickel difference . And if I recall last time you made posts about locals you called them retards , stupid and now snobs and inferred they are ripoff artists . With your constant name calling of local businesses in Ontario in every area you fish . The province is going to become very small for you . As far as me being stupid ? hmmmmm . Since my brain's not addled by Vodka,,, Sergio , I seem to have a good memory , unlike yours . And since your getting minnows closer to your route of travel why do you need to know the price since your going there anyways , right ? . We all know why, it's because your cheap beyond thrifty . Everybody likes best bang for your buck including myself but for minnows to save a nickel ? Give me a break . TD

okay im not saving pennies im saving dollars, and its easier for me to stop in orillia then go out of my way to get ripped off by some a-hole i would rather have a chat and support jacobs then the ones that rip me off, who are you calling cheap you drive a old blazer thats about to fall apart all covered in rust and corrosion, since you cant afford a good atv you by this crappy one for 125 bucks, you are the one whos cheap, and i dont drink vodka, where as yo drink it plus plus whisky you are the alchoholic, im sure if you had to pay 7 bucks for 12 minnows whre the di$#he$d literally counts them you wouldnt be the happiest person on earth either, if you are too stupid to count then lear, if i go to a bait shop in haliburton highlands, first of all i waste like 12 bucks on gas to get out of my way, then overpay at least another 10 thats 22 dollars right there so its not cents, by the way pennies and cents are the same thing!, also i could spend thay money on some new swammers, or a new ultralight rod, that i can get at tco, or jacobs, so i will never support snobs who overprice minnows and gear! if you want to be stupid and overpay then go ahead, but i suggest you learn to count and save some money!

I agree! There's so many threads that get ruined by an ignorant comment or attitude towards another member. I thought forums were a place for like minded individuals, helping each other out!

You are a joke icefreek . As a matter of fact I do own an atv with all the options and a snowmobile too . Your just cheap . If your already so happy with where you shop then why bother asking the price of minnows ? I don't care where you shop just the way you do it and how you treat hard working retailers . If i'm using minnows I pay the same as anybody else does and my Blazer is not a rust bucket but who really cares . You have a very good imagination . Are you just mad because I have worked hard all my life to earn what I have . Would you like to see my atv . Here you go penny pincher !!!! . My door as is always open for you to drop by and visit just like the sign says . TD

use tip-ups and spreaders and the smallest minnows you can get for Temagami whities Nice to find a gentleman who's got something to say besides petty squabbling. Yes with the whites it was about the spreaders with pinheads, but we were only catching them off tip ups, only 1 whitey caught with an actual rod, Lots caught on the tip up. My buddy was targeting them more, i as usual went after the walleye. Caught a fare bit of those too. All in all a very good trip, hit all four of the winter species, got whiteys, Lakers, walleye and ling cod (burbot). Nothing for the record books, but all perfect eating size!. I limited out on walleye early and had to switch to Lakers. Thanks all for your bait shop postings, always good to know locations
