Went out and got a big surprise. Shot 4 ducks in ahour than was waiting for a couple big mallards and there was a big flock of birds that I never seen before. They came by me and I was looking. Than staring trying to figure them out. I managed to find it in me to pull the trigger just because I saw this bird in the pic. I shot 2 birds fell hmmm. Now to figure out what they were, I thought for sure they were old ''squaw'' than after a closer look I relized they were not. So off to pick up the decoys and head home. When I arrived home I looked on the web for these birds in ontario. They didn't come up, than I looked up all ducks and found out these birds were ''SEA DUCKS"" Thats the name of em. Never had I ever shot or seen this duck here before or heard of them here. I guess the big wind storm that went threw blew em way off course. Now I have this duck in my freezer got it ready for the taxidermist. Gonna add it to my collection. Never thought I was gonna have a day like this 1. flip

Hi ...
Pretty bird Flip, but aren't you supposed to know what they are Before you pull the trigger ... I mean, in case they are Harliquins or some other protected bird...?
" Absoluately AGREE!!! That kind of person not a hunter a jacka$$!!! The bird was a red headed mergansier, they are known as diver ducks which lives on small baitfish, zebra mussels an crayfish. [glow=yellow,2,300]It was probally some ''jerk'' that didn't know how to reconize the bird before he shot it... Its stupidity like this that gives (hunters) a BAD name!! Flip"[/glow] Your words Sept. 23/12 ... Just asking , I hope they are tasty ...

You are correct. I wasn't 100% sure what kind of DUCK it was, but I also new was a legal duck to shoot before I pulled the trigger.. As I said also, I let the birds go by the 1st time. Than on the 2nd pass I shot! As for a Harliquin I defineately know the difference. But thanks for your observation in the reading. I never ''kill'' what I don't eat! And in this case, this bird is going on my wall. flip

If the bird in the picture is the one you were wondering about, thats a drake old squal/long tailed duck. They come in a few different colour patterns depending on the time of year, we get em down here in the Niagara,

You are correct, thats why i said it looked like a ''old squaw'' in flight. But for polictical reasons they removed that name an now call them ''Sea ducks''. P.s welcome to the board. flip

Hi ...
How did you know they were legal if you didn't know what they were ...?
[glow=yellow,2,300] " ...They came by me and I was looking. Than staring trying to figure them out. I managed to find it in me to pull the trigger just because I saw this bird in the pic. I shot 2 birds fell hmmm. Now to figure out what they were ..." [/glow] Nothing here about a second pass ...
Did you eat it or just put it on the wall ...?
Don't get me wrong Flip, I'm not trying to bust yer "Items"... It's just that I have been hunting since I was 5 years old, and I would NEVER, shoot at something I didn't know what it was nor would I shoot something just to identify it at home, or shoot it to put on the wall ... In the Hunters Guide Book it says " Be sure of your target before you pull the trigger..." and on the hunters test, you must be able to identify waterfowl, therefore, you must be able to identify them in the field also... Nice looking duck though ...
