Have you ever wondered if you have the right starting battery for your boat? There is a simple rule of thumb to follow when selecting a starting battery. For marine purposes you should have 2 cranking amps for each cc of engine displacement. In my 26 foot Doral Citation, i have a 350 block GM engine and therefore i have a 800 cranking amp marine battery. (350 x 2 = 700, plus an extra 100 cranking amps).
The other question is should you use a deep cycle battery or not. Although not necessary, I always use a deep cycle battery for my boat. Unlike a car battery that gets used almost daily, my boat may sit for a week or two before being run. This may lead the battery charge to be lowered to a level that requires more charging. Deep cycle batteries are meant to be recharged from a lower current state, whereas a normal car battery will suffer damage over time from too may discharge and recharge cycles. Again, although a car battery will work, you get get a longer battery life out of a deep cycle battery.

My apologies. I meant cubic inch of displacement, not CC

Deep cycle are not really meant to be starting batteries either...

The battery I purchased is a dual purpose, starting and deep cycle.

The battery I purchased is a dual purpose, starting and deep cycle. Ya they work fine, but it a compromise. A true deep cycle is slow to charge and slow to discharge by design. I run two. Regular car battery hooked to the starter circuit(gets charged a bit off the motor), and a deep cycle on the troller. Life's always a compromise though. You can have a wife. You can have a girlfriend. You can have both-it's nice at first, but eventually wears on ya.

They both serve their own purpose. A starting/deepcycle is just a beefed up starting battery, not a true deepcycle
