So recently I was out exploring some new lakes in my area and i found one loaded with rock bass and crappie, I know crappie are open all year and I know small mouth open the fourth sat of June. so my question is,what categorie does rock bass fall under, crappie or bass?
I am asking because while the crappie in this lake weren't very big, the rock bass were huge and I would've liked to try to cook some up as I've never had them before but didn't want to keep them if they were out of season

Technically neither, but closer to Crappie. There is no closed season for rock bass and again technically no limit. I would suspect they would fall under the same limits as sunfish, but the definition in the regs lists sunfish as Pumpkinseed, Bluegill, other members of the genus Lepomis and their hybrids. The genus for rock bass is Ambloplites and is Pomoxis for crappie (black or white), but they have their own category.

they are not as much meat on the critters, mostly big head and chest cavity, but they do taste almost as good as crappie. They are plentiful in lake simcoe, I used to catch loads of them and have a good fish fry, chop the head, remove scale and fry... not bad...

Ya pretty sure no limit since they are not listed. Put up an awesome fight for their size IMO. Had a couple big ones one hammer a spinnerbait when i was bass fishing last year!

Rock bass are open all year on Lake Simcoe, and i do not think there is a possession limit. I've never eaten on ebut i hae been told that if you prepare it by cutting it up into strips, and boiling it in sugar water for 10 minutes it is a poor man's lobster.

the rockbass population seemed to be quite healthy about 5 years ago in cook's bay while the Crappie, well, the summer crappie population died down. Big rockbass can be had in numbers in spring and summer...
So is there a limit ??
