Tougher bylaw enforcement is needed to control parking problems and unruly visitors to Innisfil Beach Park this summer, Mayor Gord Wauchope says.
“We have to let people know the town is not going to fool around this year,” Wauchope told council Wednesday. “Deterrence is the big thing. This is not a place to come and tear everything up and destroy things.”
Four more bylaw officers will patrol the Alcona park and surrounding streets this summer, bringing the total to six.
Increased enforcement can’t come soon enough for John Stewart who told council Wednesday the town didn’t handle problems well last year.
“The filth that you see on Mondays — human excrement, syringes, liquor bottles,” Stewart said. “The park that we love, that is the jewel of Alcona, is going to be ruined.”
Stewart, who lives on Lakelands Avenue near the park, said had to deal with many rude visitors last summer.
“I spoke with town staff attending barricades and they told me they were verbally abused and physically abused by people trying to get into the park,” he said.
Coun. Donna Orsatti said bylaw enforcement must be strict on the streets surrounding the park this summer to enforce no parking rules, including a new bylaw that bans on street parking within 1 kilometre of Lake Simcoe.
Orsatti said “it’s just as important” to supervise areas surrounding Innisfil Beach Park as the park itself.
“People wait for the summer to enjoy their homes and last year it pushed them to the brink,” she said. “I’m worried about them. We need to supervise the outlying areas.”
This year, the town will allow overflow parking on a grassy area within the park for 350 vehicles to help avoid illegal parking on surrounding streets. Overflowing parking was allowed on Labour Day weekend last year.
Coun. Stan Daurio estimates allowing an overflow lot on the last long weekend of the season stopped about six kilometres of illegal parking up and down nearby streets.
“I didn’t get one call of complaint once we opened up the overflow parking,” he said. “That’s a huge impact on the illegal parking.”
The town is also implementing several other changes this summer including:
• Expanding the boat launch area to allow more parking, including resident-only spaces. Non-residents will have to pay a fee of $10 to launch a boat in addition to the regular parking fees.
• Increasing the number of parking spaces for residents only to 120 and moving them closest to the main beach.
• Forcing bus passengers to pay $10 each to enter the park.
• Creating new barbecue zones that will ban food preparation on the beaches and limit them to outlying areas.
• Banning tents and other enclosed shelters from the park.

How about a clean up team working weekends cleaning up the park . Mondays the park should look like new . Theres no reason other then the towns lack of implamating this idea . Researved parking for locals is not a good idea , you want to use the park come early .

Unfortunately, I think this problem is only going to get worse, not better. As the area becomes a 'bedroom community' for the GTA, more local people will be trying to use waterfront parks, and there aren't enough of them to accommodate everyone. A lot of the waterfront is already in private hands, and what's left barely leaves enough for wildlife and nature, which also needs space. I see no resolution.

Yes, the number increase every year and the people seem to get ruder too.
When the park is packed like that, the amount of people is unreal. Keeping up with it would be near impossible.
The majority of people are nice, polite and clean, but as the numbers increase so do the bad apples.
All in all, the town does a pretty good job IMHO.

just an FYI, called the park this morning and inquired into the $10 additional launch fee as mentioned in the article. according to the lady i spoke to, that fee is not in effect and she said she had not been made aware of a pending change to the park fees or an additional launching fee from the town. $30 to park and launch for the day is bad enough but $40? if implemented, i guess they're suggesting that they want the park for residents only.

Peter, you could never run the show at the park or city hall. You'd have to be a liar, a cheat and only be into promoting yourself and not the town. Everything about you does not fit the MO of a politician!

Not that I am defending the park, but have any of you ever been there when it is crazy packed on a hot summer day/weekend?
i doubt that anything short of a obvious police patrol can keep the zoo in check. It may take a few tweaks here and there but they will get it right I am thinking.
As far as local economy, the town of Alcona is booming big time, with houses and such. We have the CTC opening in a few weeks. We dont really have alot of local attractions or events. I wonder if we should?
The price to me seems WAY to high.
Also, the park is pretty well spotless by midday Monday. The staff there are great, considering some of the "BS" they deal with every weekend.
Parking is an issue and will always be, I dont feel we should give up the green to make more pavement. If you cant get in, then I guess you cant get in. THAT would really suck though, so I really feel do feel some empathy there.
I dont go on weekends ever, not because of the influx of locals, thats for sure.
This is a hot debate that will never go away.
Peter, if you were running the park,it would shorten your life, believe me so.
Is a double edged sword for me, I feel for the cost and limited access, but also enjoy the price break on being local. The new rules are a positive step in the right direction. IMHO

Dude bro we have a local attraction , its called the Innisfil Beach Park . You say its crazy packed , perfect for the town to make a couple extra bucks if it new what it was doing , im not sure it does . Looks to me the manager of the parks department might not be local and is just doing his time doing his job , coming up with ideas might not be part of his job discription . Get some food trucks lined up in one area, each truck has different kind of foods , should work like that . Board walk with tent stalls for venders weekends might work as well . How about this one , i might work on this with the town in getting it set up and making money....your going to love it.. Innisfill Beach Park Bait......get minnows right at the boat launch..... I know how this can be done with the blessing of the mnr....

I gotta add some of my discontent with IBP. I live 2 mins away....I use the launch. I am gonna start kicking in the doors of every car (NON BOAT TRAILER VEHICLES) that even ENTER the boat launch area!! WHY is there not a SIGN that says NO VEHICLES PAST THIS POINT UNLESS USING LAUNCH!! All the morons parked watching the waves, go park somewhere else and get off your Timmy Coffee'd ass and walk over to the waterside. Secondly, these docks need to be at least TWICE the length!! What a shit show. 3rd, why are they 5 feet up in the air? ? There should be at the very least some small 'side' docks about 2 feet wide running along side them so you can walk on them. As it is right now, I gotta go IN the water to hook up the front of the boat to the trailer.... 4th....the docks are for BOATERS ONLY!! Stay the EF off and out of the way of the people in the boats trying to maneuver, etc!!!! This is all just common sense....common sense that doesn't seem to exist anymore....
