congrats on passing the courses, I just got mine a couple of seasons ago.
when u say mainly for deer what else are you thinking of hunting with your "deer rifle"
so far I only have a shotgun and a crossbow because where I hunt for deer it is a no rifle zone, and a controlled gun hunt.
I was thinking of a .243 as a coyote and deer rifle, if u can get a rifle suitable for more then 1 species u hunt it can help until you have the funds to fill that cabinet and have a dedicated gun for each species.
I've met lots of new hunters that have burned a pile of cash on buying things that they don't need, I have a friend who never checks the regs b4 his purchase and him and his dad bought rifles for deer season (1 week, 2 in some areas) b4 a bow. the look on their faces as I showed them the season for bows,(3 months), and that the area they hunt and had their antlerless tag in was controlled shotgun/muzzleloader and no does during gun was priceless.

I use a 30-06 and a 270. Both great rifles. I use my 270 for yotes where I live because its a control area also. The 30-06 is for my property, It takes down every walking animal I aim it at.
Congrats Play safe shoot straight to lol Flip

I hunt with either a 12 gauge shotgun with a slug barrel or my old 303 Enfield. 90% of the deer I see are easily in range of the shotgun so big fancy rifles just don't do anything for me. My dad use to have a saying...." If you can't kill it with a shotgun...you shouldn't be shooting...you should be running!!!" He sure loved his shotguns and the ammo was cheap. He did not buy slug shells but used Number 4 "cut shells" You Tube has some great videos explaining how this is done. He also like to hunt with an old single shot because it forced you to take care of your shot placement. There was NO second chance. The last buck he ever shot had an exit wound the size of your fist.

Congrats. I have a 30-06 for deer. But also a muzzle loader and shotgun for controlled hunts as well.. Like sash says find out where you will hunt first before buying. I have two places I hunt for deer. One is a friends farm where I use my 30-06. Another is in a controlled hunt area and I have to use shotgun and muzzle loader, depending on the season.

Once you go compound or crossbow the gun/rifle isn't the same Once you get a animal within 10yds or closer nothing beats the heart pumping adrenaline that goes with it..
I SIR SAY YOU ARE GOING TO GET ADDICTED you JUST DON'T KNOW IT YET... Flip

Flip he's so right, having to get so close to game, I borrowed a crossbow this season and now I have 1. combine that with a way longer season and that whole no sunday gun hunting and it's a smart decision. don't wait till the gun season is over and you haven't filled your tag b4 u decide to get a crossbow, start looking now if u want to hunt deer and even turkeys if u will hunt sundays.

I would look a little deeper into the regs as no sunday gun hunting means no discharge of a firearm in that area on a Sunday. Compound bows and cross bows are still considered to be a firearm under their regulations and some municipalitys may have different restrictions than others. Dont let the MNR differntiate the rules if a situation arises as you wont come out on top. I stay away from those areas on Sundays! Better safe than sorry...

Congratulations on becoming a new Canadian hunter, WELCOME... For Deer, Moose, Elk or Bear I use a British 303, in less bushy areas or the old reliable Remington 308 with 180 Gr. leads. I have never hunted Caribou or Grizzly Bear but I suspect I would use the 308 if I had the chance.
