I didn't want to hijack Robg's thread, so I created this one. Very interesting topic that Andre has brought up. Experienced fishermen compared to safe ice reports (possibly by not so experienced fisherman).
Here are my thoughts... I have seen early ice videos where experienced fishermen are on thin ice (much less than 4 inches which is the recommended safe ice to walk on). Without judging them venturing out on "unsafe ice" because you can tell they have all the safety gear on, I can't help thinking what a "new" fisherman (women included) would think watching those videos. They are great to watch but are they sending out the wrong message? I am sure some are thinking "If they can go, I can go".
On the other hand, safe ice reports should be based on facts. Ice measurements and distance from shore would be a must. Donny and Gail always (at least from the reports that I have watched) will report the distance from shore and ice thickness. Unsafe ice can also mean that the ice just formed and I'm not going out to chance a swim just so I can take a measurement.
Sorry for the long winded post, but I believe it's an interesting topic for discussion (not bashing).
Thoughts anyone?

It is important for new fishermen to listen to people that have been fishing a location and know how and when the ice forms. I've fished IPB from safe ice to last ice every weekend for 19 years (since i moved to Alcona) and know the ice there pretty good. When giving an ice report i always keep in mind that guys of all types of experience will be reading these. Some guys feel comfortable on 3 inches of ice. Others shouldn't be out there at that time. The last thing i want to do is mislead someone into thinking there is safe ice when in fact it's sketchy. I want everyone to be safe. If i ere on the side of caution then so be it. I want everyone to go home safe and sound at the end of the day. Guys can heed my advice or not. It's there decision in the end. But even when ice reports say it's safe we Should all have our safety gear and spud. Tight lines guys.

To reiterate....Rob , much appreciated as you live closer to the lake the I do and terms of the experience part, I was referring to Kemp in which in your posts in recent years have mentioned your novice in that area if I'm not mistaken and as many of us know that Kemp and Cooks are like different lakes.

Hey Andre, how so when it comes to safety? Again, this is a discussion and not a challenge to anyone. I for one would think that the same safe ice (4" black) for walking would apply everywhere? Please correct me if I'm wrong...

Correct. I'm not as familiar with Kempenfelt Bay as i am with IBP. An ice report from one shouldn't be read as for both. Each area has its own tendencies as far as ice formation. That's why i keep my reports to the area i'm very familiar with. I rely on those who fish Kemp regularly to repot on that area.

Please correct me if I'm wrong... Definitely a good question......4 inches is 4 inches no matter how you spin it .... what I was trying to get at was deep bodies of water freeze at different rates than shallow bodies in terms of time as well as inconsistencies from shore to center generally have way more inconsistencies during early ice. Sorry to be a broken record but to be clear.... I just wanted to bring to light about being careful when leading some people to follow others in terms of experience....in the end was my mistake because I, for some dumb reason, thought we were talking about Kemp the whole time. I've met Rob years ago at Gilford Rd and I deliberately look for his posts from IBP and south because of his experience and enthusiasm.

Mistakes happen, so no worries about misunderstandings. The cold spell has moved in here so there is ice to be made! Unfortunately, we had/have some strong wind gusts coming from the North and I'm pretty sure the ice that was there on the North side of Cooks might be gone. Will wait for Robg's and Donny's/Gail's update. So far the south end looks good. XF
