Please let us who live far away know if there might be a fund set up for the family. Such a tragedy. So happy the family is safe!

Gilford teen may have saved family home from fire
Innisfil Journal By Bruce Hain An alert teenager likely played a role in saving not only her family’s house from burning down, but her neighbour’s two doors away.
At about 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, Nadine Paquette was getting ready to call it a night. She happened to look out her window and saw what she first thought was fog at the house next door at 1116 Gilford Rd. Looking again, she spotted orange flames coming from behind the kitchen window of the adjoining property, her father, David says.
“She ran downstairs to tell me. I looked out and saw fire. We threw on some clothes, gathered up my other three children, ran out to the car and called 911,” he says.
Paquette then ran two doors down and started banging on the front door.
“I knew this fire could spread fast.”
After thinking maybe no one was home, a woman finally came to the door and Paquette alerted her to the danger.
Making sure his children were safe, he saw the house quickly turn into an inferno.
While firefighters arrived on the scene in less than 10 minutes, it was obvious nothing could be done to save the house.
“It was fully engulfed,” Paquette says.
Fire crews turned their attention to the Paquette dwelling and the house to the east.
“They were basically trying to keep the fire contained.”
A nearby, newly installed fire hydrant had not yet been hooked up, requiring firefighters to use water from tanker trucks and use a portable pump to siphon lake water to the scene.
Of concern to firefighters was Paquette’s ice fishing huts and other wooden structures near the property line. Fortunately, the prevailing westerly wind kept flames from touching the huts or his house.
“They kept their hoses on my huts,” he says. “The heat popped our garage window and cracked an upstairs window. I had propane cylinders in my garage, too.”
Neighbours, aroused by the commotion, arrived on the scene and quickly offered accommodation to the Paquette children.
Firefighters remained on the scene well into the morning hours and also went into Paquette’s house with infrared cameras to look for potential hot spots. None were found.
On Friday afternoon, his insurance company had already dispatched a crew who replaced much of the siding and eavestrough on the east side of his house that was scorched and warped by the heat of the fire. Several of Paquette’s ice huts suffered damage as well.
“It was Nadine seeing it that probably saved the two houses,” he says. “If it had been 10 minutes later, who knows what might have happened.

NEIGHBOURING HOMES SAVED DURING RECENT FIRE
Innisfil, ON, April 24, 2014 – Last night Innisfil Fire and Rescue (IFR) attended a serious house fire at 1116 Gilford Road in Innisfil. Arriving at the scene IFR found the house to be consumed by fire and a total loss, but they were able to save the neighbouring homes. At this time the Town of Innisfil understands that the home was not occupied, as it was under major renovations and it appears that no one was injured.
A nearby, newly constructed fire hydrant had not yet been connected to the water system. As is a common rural fire fighting practice then, IFR fought the fire using water provided by water tankers. Using a portable pump, nearby lake water was also used to fight the blaze. Some damage was sustained to the two neighbouring homes, which the Town of Innisfil is currently reviewing.
“Fire prevention starts with you,” says Innisfil Fire Chief Jon Pegg. “Innisfil Fire and Rescue Services would like to remind all residents and property owners of the importance of installing smoke alarms and taking fire precautions.”
Although there have recently been several fires in Innisfil, each fire was investigated and none of them appear to be connected.
