I have a one man clam Kenai ice shelter. I have seen that some guys have bolted cross country or downhill skis to the bottom of them in order to make it easier to pull when walking. Has anybody tried this? will bolting the skis directly on the bottom of the tub give you enough clearance when pulling the hut out, or should i make a smitty sled and sit the hut on top of it? thanks in advance for any tips. If anybody has fabricated something, pics would be helpful

Exactly what i was thinking Peter. That's why i'm leaning towards a smitty sled that will give me @ 8 inches of clearance from the snow. If anybody has a good design i would love to see some pictures. I need to figure out the best weight distribution. I.e. weight in middle of skis, or more to the back, etc. The Kenai itself weighs @ 50 lbs , and by the time i get my gear in there, it's about 75 to 80 lbs. Doesn't sound like much, but when you are pulling that through 6 or 8 inches of snow, it's really rough going. Also trying to figure out a way to have some flip up, or removable wheels for when you are dragging it across a parking lot, or down Gilford Rd to the ice. As you can see i have a lot of questions, and any input would be appreciated. Pictures would be fantastic. AS a mater of fact, why don't we get this threat going by showing off your sleds. I know you guys are quite innovative an there are probably some fantastic designs out there. And, any input would help me, or anybody else trying to design one.

I'll be doing my sled up this year. I have no problem showing the finished product. It'll be up here when I'm all done.

Always remember - anything you do adds weight.

Weight on skis is easier than not.

More important than weight is the amount of snow you have to crush to go through or over it. Grandpa's sleigh with the narrow runners was well thought out.

I finally got my smitty sled done. I found and old pair of downhill skis that i used. I will post some pics in the next day or two. Just needs a paint job now and i'm ready . The entire sled cost me @ $25.00 to make and took one afternoon. I only had a jig saw, and it would have gone faster with the proper type o tools, but i think it turned out ok. Hopefully this will make pulling my Clam Kenai a lot easier. Cant' afford a ATV or snowmobile, so i am stuck walking. I really hope this makes it easier to pull my hut out.
