Proposed Season January 1st to March 15th and 2nd Saturday in May to September 30th Recent monitoring data suggest positive trends, including a total of nine year classes present in the population with two strong year classes since 2008. This has supported an increase in relative abundance over the past three years. A very strong year class was also evident in 2004; however, many of these cisco have since died due to natural causes. The proposed regulatory options are not anticipated to negatively impact the cisco population or other fish species in Lake Simcoe. Based on the positive monitoring information, MNR supports a limited cisco fishery that encourages sustainable harvest opportunities. This support recognizes the irrevocable changes in the aquatic ecosystem of Lake Simcoe (such as invasive species) and that the lake will likely not support historical population levels of cisco again. The proposed regulation changes align with the Lake Simcoe Fisheries Community Objectives which aim to manage cisco as a forage base for lake trout, and when sustainable, to re-open a cisco fishery, for harvest opportunities. These proposed changes are endorsed by the Lake Simcoe Fisheries Stakeholder Committee and MNR’s Lake Simcoe Fisheries Management Committee. The proposed regulatory options are not anticipated to increase the number of anglers on Lake Simcoe. However, they could increase the total number of angler hours on Lake Simcoe annually by providing additional recreational opportunities to existing fisheries. Angler reports of incidental catches of cisco have increased in recent years. The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Lake Simcoe Fisheries Stakeholder Committee welcome your input on these proposed changes and all feedback received will inform the decision-making process. You can provide your feedback through email at fishaurora@ontario.ca. For more information, you can contact the Aurora District office at 905-713-7398. There is also an Environmental Registry Posting associated with these proposed changes. You can review this posting by going to the Environmental Registry website at www.ebr.gov.on.ca/ERS-WEB-External/ and typing in the registry number 012-1601. All feedback through these avenues must be received by Tuesday May 20th.

I agree with Sab, 3 cisco for sport license and 1 for conservation license. And keep it open Jan 1st to march 15. For 2 or 3 years and see how the population of cisco does. I know that this ice fishing season my friend and i caught quite a few cisco but too bad we could not keep. Areas that we seen most cisco was big bay point and near fox island.

Peter thank you for all you do for us anglers. IMHO the MNR proposal is being misunderstood since MNR is proposing two ways to open the cisco season, not whether a season should happen.
But what really seems to be going on is that ....if you read option two which has an aggregate limit with whitefish....it seems MNR is worried about the whitefish population (option two would reduce the whitefish caught via replacing some of them with cisco).
MNR may have a secret agenda as it often does. MNR may later be announcing that anglers want option 2 regardless of surveys/public input at open houses. Why? Because this would allow MNR to quietly reduce whitefish harvest to prevent what otherwise may occur, namely, MNR will announce a reduced whitefish harvest limit to 1 (which would go over like a lead balloon).
The whitefish harvest seems to have dropped dramatically compared to recent years. Something is up with that. Creel surveys that MNR does must be seeing this as most of the rest of us are. With $$$ cutbacks the MNR is being squeezed from above to reduce rather than increase stocking, so if they claim we all want option 2 then it'll reduce pressure to stock whitefish.
IMO to include cisco with whitefish can only mean the above scenario.
We must remember that the MNR proposal is asking for our input on cisco/herring. Whitefish is also on the table but anglers don't see it.
MNR needs to be pressed for their position on the whitefish pop'n and what they are considering doing...if anything....about that. Ask for creel survey summaries for the past several years to see what they see re any reduced harvest levels. This data will point to whether a reduced whitefish limit may be in the wings.
Thoughts anyone?
